Education
has always been the ladder by which the poor have overcome humble
beginnings to excel in America. Most of us who have achieved a
measure of success can understand the role of a good education.
Sadly, even in Utah, the quality of public education varies significantly.
Students from public schools in low income neighborhoods frequently
test well below those attending schools in more affluent areas.
The children of the economically disadvantaged are too often relegated
to unsafe, underperforming schools, which offer them little hope
for escaping ignorance and poverty. Even when parents understand
enough to want more for their children, they may not have the
means to move or make an educational change. Children First Utah
was created to give those parents a real choice—a choice
that will help break the cycle of poverty that is expanding our
welfare system.
The children receiving our scholarships gain self-confidence and
gain new vision for their lives. One third-grade scholarship recipient
recently wrote that he was pleased to attend his new school so
he wouldn’t grow up to be a waiter; instead, he plans to
be an engineer. As the only community resource of its kind in
the state, Children First Utah has offered thousands of children
new access to a quality education.
This philanthropic effort requires us to reach out to the community
for support. Your help, whatever the size, will make a difference
in the lives of children. The scholarships that your gifts make
possible will offer them a lifetime of opportunity, lifting them
out of the poverty into which they were born. I firmly believe
that there is no place your contributions can have a greater impact
for good. Please help us help Utah’s needy children!
